JUSTIN BIEBER will not be singing about “sex, drugs and swearing.” Nope. That’s just not him. He may be turning 18 in a few months, but the singer is adamant that he is not going to be one of those artists who become “a bad influence.”
Good for you, Justin.
We can probably all agree that Justin is on top of the world right now. Despite being embroiled in a paternity suit scandal (which still hasn’t been proven), Justin’s had a pretty good year—he’s in a high-profile relationship with fellow singer Selena Gomez, he’s performed for President Obama and his family twice, and he’s just launched a successful Christmas album.
But now that he’s about to turn 18, Justin has a choice to make—does he burn himself out and descend into a world of drugs and alcohol like most teen stars, or does he climb higher still and make the successful transition from teen pop star to a legendary artist like, say Michael Jackson?
In a recent interview with V magazine, Justin talks about going from childhood to adulthood, and how he wants to do it on his own terms:
“People need to know I’m not a kid anymore. But at the end of the day, I’m not completely grown-up. I’m still learning. I’m going to grow up how I grow up. I’m not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol. I want to do it at my own pace.”
Grown-up or not, Justin has no plans of doing the things most transitioning young stars end up doing to convince people that they are growing up (like going out drinking, doing drugs, or displaying more of their sexuality) to tarnish his reputation:
“But I’m never going to make myself so the kids and the parents don’t respect me. There’re some artists that [parents won’t] let their kids go and see because they think they’re a bad influence.”
The “Under The Mistletoe” singer adds:
“I don’t want to start singing about things like sex, drugs, and swearing. I’m into love, and maybe I’ll get more into making love when I’m older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody.”
Justin also reveals that his plan is to become an artist like Michael Jackson—in terms of music. He says:
“I want to be able to do what Michael did—he always sang clean lyrics—and it was always that little kids loved Michael and grandparents loved Michael.”
But if his goal is to become like Michael, does he worry that he’s going to go, well, crazy, like the King of Pop did? Justin responds:
“Michael had a really bad childhood. I was blessed with a great childhood. My mom loved me. My dad loved me. I’m now a teenager and I don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything in my life. I’ve gotten to experience everything I possibly could. I don’t look back and think, Ugh, I wish I would have been able to do that. Maybe [Michael] missed out on a lot, so he tried to [re-live] his childhood when he was older. But I’ve got such good people around me, I’m not worried. “
Justin, whose fan base is predominantly female, is also hoping to reach out to a wider audience now that he’s a little older. He says:
“It’s all about making good music, and people hate me before they even listen to my music. I know a lot of people say they hate Justin Bieber who haven’t even listened to any of my music. They just hate me because they hate the idea of me… And I feel like the more I put out, people will realize it’s really good music, and they’re going to come. I’m not worried about the guy fans because they’re going to come. If they listen to the music and they like it, it doesn’t matter if they go and act like they don’t like me. They’re going to go home and listen to it.”
Now doesn’t that sound impressive?
