BAMAKO (Reuters) - Malian rebels have planted their flag in the northern town of Timbuktu after government forces fled the ancient trading post, a local lawmaker and a resident told Reuters. "They have arrived in the town. They are planting their flag," El Hadj Baba Haidara, member of parliament for Timbuktu, told Reuters by telephone. A resident said the MNLA rebels had planted their flag at the governor's office, the mayor's office and the main military camp. Both sources said the town was mainly quiet, except for sporadic gunfire. ...

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A senior al Shabaab figure has openly disagreed with the Somali militant group's leader, in a sign of growing internal divisions that residents fear could lead to violence. The al Qaeda-aligned group wants to remove the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed to impose a strict version of Sharia or Islamic law. They control large areas of south and central Somalia. Sheikh Muktar Abu Zubeir, who has led al Shabaab since 2008, said in a statement last week that no other armed or unarmed Islamist group could be created in the country. ...

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali rebels prepared to advance on the ancient trading city of Timbuktu on Sunday, their latest target in a lightning push for a northern homeland which has put the leaders of last week's coup on the back foot. The main goal of the March 22 putsch by disgruntled soldiers was to step up the offensive against the northern rebels. But the coup has spectacularly backfired, emboldening the alliance of Tuareg nomads and Islamists to seize new ground. The northern administrative centre of Kidal fell on Friday, to be followed on Saturday by the garrison town of Gao. ...
