Grand Palace is Bangkok’s most famous royal palace to visit and is a must to see for all tourists who visit Bangkok. This beautiful palace was the official residence and home for various Thai Kings after the 18th Century. Within the Grand Palace one will find the most spectacular Temple called the Wat Phra Kaew or alternatively called the Temple of the Emerald Buddha which contains the very famous and greatly revered Emerald Buddha statue which dates back to the 14th Century. The plan of Grand Palace is similar to the Palace in Ayutthaya. It is rectangular shaped having Chao Phraya river on the western side and Temple of the Emerald Buddha on the eastern side.

Wat Phra Kaew or popularly known as the Temple of Emerald Buddha is regarded as the most holy and sacred temple in Thailand. The roots and history of this Emerald Buddha can be linked and traced back to the Indian continent few centuries after Lord Buddha attained Nirvana till the statue was finally enshrined in Bangkok, Thailand during the reign of King Rama I. This marked the beginning of the Chakri Dynasty in Thailand. The Emerald Buddha which is a dark green statue is 26 inches tall and is carved from a single Jade Stone. Except the King of Thailand no other person is allowed to touch the statue.
